Riley's been intentionally negotiating an impossible deal for Maxine so the studio she works for will drop her, so he can introduce Naomi as his "new star". On the set of her current movie, Maxine gets a letter with cut-out individual letters like the ones usually seen on a ransom note. Someone's threatening to kill her. Riley thinks it's a good idea for her to get a bodyguard, therefore Jack comes into the picture. Jack is a former governor's bodyguard who gets shot while protecting the governor from an assassination attempt.
